I've got a lot of time for the Doctor Who and Torchwood production team, but you've gotta feel that setting off a loud explosion today in the centre of a major British city wasn't the brightest thing they've ever done...

I'm not convinced that casting Kylie Minogue as a waitress on the Titanic is either. It smells a bit of the 'special guest star' syndrome that afflicted JN-T Who. Catherine Tate was borderline in last year's Christmas special, but then I think that she's not actually a bad straight actress. We'll see as far as Kylie is concerned. I suppose it'll help the ratings amongst the key demographic of men in their early to mid 30s. (Mind you, I'm in that demographic, and I've always been immune to the charms of the Antipodean pop princess.)

I had a friend at Oxford with a large photo of Kylie on his wall. He explained that he was fascinated by Kylie "as a concept".

ROFL! The Daily Mail has some wonderful photos of it here:

(And don't look at me like that. I googled and it was the first link that came up.)

It's a truly lovely explosion. *sniggers* I wish I'd been there :D.

Nothing wrong with the Daily Mail - not too big, the print doesn't come off in your hand and pleasingly right-wing (most of the time)!

I can see both sides of the argument: (a) creating a big explosion now was a bad idea and (b) postponing the filming would have been a waste of money. What they ought to have done was have much more publicity that it was going to happen an so minimise the number of people who were concerned, worried, scared, etc.

Having seen Kylie in Moulin Rouge she is actually not bad in a small role; though I wouldn't want to see a film where she was the main (or even secondary) star.

Hm. So:
1) nobody was actually blown up
2) nobody was injured
3) there was no panic, and information about it was available via local media
4) a number of people saw something from a distance, misinterpreted it, and became mildly alarmed.

C'mon people, show some gumption! Terrorist attacks are scary *because they hurt people* not because they make a bang! Being alarmed is not that bad!

I didn't know when I wrote this. Must have had a premonition...
