Is it...
a) At least a week, to allow you time to rearrange your schedule at the busiest time of your work year?
b) At least 24 hours, to allow you to cancel your hotel reservation, thus saving the firm £160?
c) Just before you set off?

Or d) After you've checked into your hotel?

Well it does depend on the circumstances but I'd say A or B for a polite colleague, especially A if they suspect things may be about to come up that prevent them attending when they can forewarn you of a possible cancelllation. Unless someone in their close family has just dropped dead or gone into hospital with a life-threatening illness or to have a baby (but in the latter case especially A applies really).

Normally, (a) or (b) depending on circumstances.

However, (c) would be acceptable if they had, for example, been involved in a non-fatal car crash on the way to work.

And (d) would be just about acceptable for their PA to pass on the message that had been the fatality in a car crash.

Why do you ask?

That must have been really annoying, I presume the hotel was far enough away from home that you had to stay there anyway?

It was - it was in London.

Am replying to this as he is going BACK to London this evening (for a meeting that with a bit of luck will actually happen), and possibly won't see it as I am not sure he has email notifications turned on.
