OK, here's the poser. You've just been asked to create a new Star Trek series. What's the setting? When is it, in relation to the other series and films? Who are the main characters?

I have seen so little of the later Star Trek that I don't think I'm the best person to make suggestions.

I actually like the approach they've adopted in the forthcoming film. When I'm a fan of a show, it's because of the characters. I'm not satisfied by a new lot of totally different characters set somewhere else in the same fictional universe. I'm not a fan of a franchise, but of specific characters within it. I don't have a problem with seeing the same characters potrayed by different actors. It worked with James Bond, Sherlock Holmes etc etc., after all.
