Because he's lazy essentially, and doesn't have enough time, what with all the computer games and so on...

What he doesn't do is write the next great British novel. Being the frustrated creative sort (it's hard to be creative when you're a chartered accountant, although senior partner Top Cat (Pellinor will know who that is) once asked that I be assigned to a marketing project in Plymouth because I was just that) I often get ideas for books that I know I will never write.

Just in case there are any frustrated writers here who have the motivation but not the inspiration, I thought I'd share two of my ideas with you. All I want in return if you turn the ideas into bestsellers is an acknowledgement. We like acknowledgments. Bacchus gave bunn one in return for providing the background cover photograph for two of his books and the_marquis gave me one years ago for helping him ever so slightly with "Accounting Careers Worldwide".

The first idea is a children's book. The working title is "The Curious Double Life of Xerxes Evans". It tells the story of a nervous, slightly nerdy schoolboy from a particularly Welsh part of North Wales who leads a strange double life as Xerxes the Great, the 5th century BC Emperor of Persia.

The second idea concerns a man in his fifties who has a boring office job working for a large company. When an office refurbishment means that his cubicle is cut off completely from the rest of the office, he is forgotten about and is able to plan world domination from his desk.

That children's book idea sounds as if it came out of a mind that saw 300 and read a Diana Wynne Jones novel in the same day, then had a very strange dream as a result.

I've never read a Diana Wynne Jones novel, and nor have I seen (or read) '300' (although I would like to).

I did study the Persian Wars at A-level though, and this idea probably dates back to then.

Bacchus still has that photo as his desktop background on Orac, it is a very nice photo.
