With the exception of the Orac replica I built, the last four PCs I have built have been named after Middle Earth dragons - Glarung, Smaug, Ancalagon and Scatha. I'm about to build a new machine (more on this later).

My dilemma is this - there are (to my knowledge) only four named canon dragons in Tolkien's Middle Earth works. What should I do?

Option 1: Call the new machine 'Chrysophylax' (the dragon in 'Farmer Giles of Ham'). Not a ME dragon, but still Tolkien. (Are there any other dragons named in other Tolkien works?)

Option 2: Name the new machine after some other Middle Earth baddy: Gothmog, Ungoliant* etc.

Option 3: Name the new machine after a non-canon Middle Earth dragon - I think there were some named in ICE's 'Middle Earth Role Playing' game, and I'm guessing there must be dragons in the MMORPG.

Option 4: Give up on the Tolkien theme, and name the new PC after something else entirely.

Your thoughts?

* Had I been going for a quad-core CPU and Quad SLI (i.e. four GPUs), then Ungoliant or Shelob might have made sense since four plus four equals eight, which is the number of legs that big spider-type things have.

Creatrix points out that Roverandom has a red dragon and a white dragon, and asks, "Are they getting a new computer?"

There are only those four mentioned in both Foster and Tyler. Also a Google search supports the only named four.

You could go for "The Green Dragon", not quite in the same theme as the others though...

I think you deserve a prize for thinking of the other canon Middle Earth dragon.

Now if my computer was going to illuminated with green lights, this would be a brilliant name. But it's going to be red, so I don't think it will work quite so well.

In that case I'd go for option 2, for much the same reason as louisedennis. Also, it is closest in theme to your current machines.

Option 2, I should think, will keep you going longest, without losing the theme entirely.

Mine are Earthsea dragons, there are a fair number of those available. Yevaude, perhaps?

Creatrix offers the suggestion that if you had originally built a Glomund, you could then upgrade it to a Glaurung.

I've already had a Glaurung (a big, hot, wheezing thing that was quite appropriately named). Having a new PC called Glomund would seem like a retrograde step.
