I've joined the mainstream.

I've bought a Nintendo Wii.

Or at least I've ordered one from Game's website which claims to have them in stock, on account of there being none at all in shops in either Cribbs Causeway or Bristol* city centre

I did buy some games - Super Mario Galaxy (perfect 10 in Edge - only the eighth game ever to achieve this), Madden NFL 08 and Resident Evil 4. I'd quite like to get Endless Ocean too.

Oh and I ordered a component cable because I'm assuming that the picture quality on a 42" screen would be terrible through a composite cable.

Longer term is the plan to upgrade our old standard definition 42" plasma to something bigger (50" probably) and at least HD-ready (probably full HD 1080p in fact), buy a Playstation 3 (apparently a damn good blu-ray player in its own right) and BUY ROCK BAND! If it's out, how about Rock Band on PS3 in time for Wightfrag?

* Yes Chris, I know... I promise, I will come and see you one time when I'm in Bristol!

Does this mean you are now going squii? :-)

This sounds terribly ignorant, and I'm sure it's one of those LJ and similar concepts that people just assume you know, but...

I don't think I really quite understand what 'squee' (or 'squii') means. I mean as far as I can see it is a girlish exclamation of glee, possibly in a fannish context, but I suspect there are...nuances.

I remember parrot_knight referring to the 'Squee Generation'. Who might they be?

The good news (squii?) is that Game reckon that my order is on its way!

Not necessarily girlish. I know plenty of men who squee, and it doesn't have to be in a fannish context. I, personally, squee about all sorts of things; Mole will tell you I squee too much, but he can quite easily out-squee me when he wants to, especially when he gets to sing. :-)

I don't know if that helps, but it may at least extend the context a little...

No, that doesn't help. I'm more confused now!

Is squeeing a physical act?

From: [identity profile] miss-next.livejournal.com
It can be, I suppose, but I would normally define it as just an expression of great rejoicing.

So if a footballer scores a great goal, runs over to his supporters and pumps his fist in the air, is that squeeing?

I would certainly define that as squeeing, yes. I also have several (male) cricket-supporting friends who would agree with me that Monty Panesar squees when he takes a wicket.

Is that squeeing because of his excitement?

What about an arrogant celebration, like this one:

C'est le squee?

Incidentally, that's my all time favourite goal celebration. Just so...arrogant!

Squee is definitely about excitement. I have a gut feeling that if you're squeeing, you want other people to be happy and excited with you, so I'm not quite sure that arrogance fits into the concept.

On the other hand, this is quite a new word and I'm not a lexicographer. Other people may think that arrogance is not incompatible with squee.

H'mm, interesting philosophical ground here... :-)

Certainly deserving of further debate...

"Squii" is just a portmanteau of "squee" and "wii", I suspect.

You should have come to G'ham, Woolies has had them in stock here since they were launched. Admittedly that possibly still isn't a good enough reason to travel to one of the grottiest parts of this country :-)

The King George V in Brompton is a friendly pub.

The Royal Engineers museum is interesting.

Er ... that's about it!

They're both nearer to Chatham than where we live though.

No Wii.

No playstation.

No flatscreen TV.

We're really out of the mainstream.

We don't have any of those either :-)

We don't have any sparkling wine in the house - each to their own as far as Friday night entertainment goes!

We don't have any sparkling stuff that I'm allowed to drink at the moment apart from fizzy water :-( We've run out of everything but the 'Touch it and die' stuff. Still, I have high hopes that one of those might get opened tomorrow night, even though it isn't a Friday :-)

"We've run out of everything"

Is this the end of civilisation? I think there may be something about this in the Book of Revelations...

:-D I was rather horrified when he told me. It meant we had to celebrate my exam result with cava! I can only presume we had cava in because neither of us really like it, if I have to drink cheap fizzy stuff I far prefer prosecco.
