The Mail Online immigration one actually says 2.5 years (30 months) not 18 months... unless it WAS a misprint and they changed it since you posted the link (oh I so want that to be true - the irony, the irony!)

Anyway... doing the maths on that... that's 75 years divided by 30 months gives 30 increments. And Brum City Council says their population is 1,085,400 (http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/cs/Satellite?c=Page&childpagename=Planning-and-Regeneration%2FPageLayout&cid=1223096353755&pagename=BCC%2FCommon%2FWrapper%2FWrapper) sooo...

1,085,400 x 30 = 32,562,000.

32.5 million extra bods. Which is roughly what it increased in the LAST 30 years and the country didn't go to hell in a handcart then, Nor did I ever see anyone bemoaning the drop in population in the 70s/early 80s (be interested if anyone can point me to such a thing). Do any of these population scare pundits ever state what they think the optimum population for the UK is???

EDIT: was looking at wrong graph! It's much longer than the last 30 years for the 30 million increase. Note to self: don't try to talk to folk and look at graphs and type at the same time... Still interested in anyone who fretted about the 70s population drop, though!

Love the Orkney Library link.

I fear that the 18 months mistake is actually mine!
