philmophlegm: (Left 4 Dead)

Anyone got any recommendations for bargains in the Steam sale?

Games that I can recommend:

  • FTL is a game I never got fully into, but it is quite diverting, and some people love it. Worth a punt for just £1.74. Quite Travelleresque in a way.

  • Just Cause 2 looks fab, and has fun moments. Probably best to avoid the plot and just treat it as a silly open world shooter. Certainly worth £1.99.

  • XCOM Enemy Unknown is very, very good, but also very, very hard. If you like turn based tactical wargames, it's definitely worth £7.49.

  • For multiplayer FPS zombie fun, you can't beat Left 4 Dead 2 (£3.73).

  • The Witcher 2 is one of my favourite RPGs of recent years (I actually preferred it to Skyrim). Bargain at £7.49.

So, can anyone recommend any more bargains that I might have missed? Anyone care to offer an opinion on Chivalry (£4.74), Surgeon Simulator 2013 (£2.37), The Walking Dead (£5.24), Legend of Grimrock (£2.99), Far Cry 3 (£11.99), Grand Theft Auto IV (£4.99), Bioshock Infinite (£17.49), Dishonored (£8.99), Tomb Raider (the new one) (£14.99), Torchlight II (£7.49) or for that matter anything else in the sale?

Torchlight is great if you liked Diablo and similar. Horribly addictive, and if you have someone to play with then the Co-Op is great fun (Julie and I played through it in about a week of intense clicking).

If you ever loved Dungeon Master (Not Dungeon Keeper) then you want to play Legend of Grimrock. I didn't, but my friends that did reported good things.

The Walking Dead won lots of awards, and if you want grim horror and a gripping, tense, story then is apparently very, very, good.

I just bought "Fez" and have played the first few levels. It's an exploration platformer which is 2D, except that you can rotate the world to get to the missing dimension - so you never have more than two dimensions at a time, but which two is under your control. Very neat, and plays with the idea nicely.

I have been playing a lot of FTL, because I refuse to be beaten by the damn thing.

Grimrock: I loved Dungeon Master and hated Grimrock.

The thing about Grimrock is that it's not really a dungeon crawler - it's a puzzle game disguised as a dungeon crawler.

If you like puzzle games AND dungeon crawlers, you'll like it. I don't.

Contrarian opinion on torchlight... I "only just" liked Diablo... I liked it but not hugely. Torchlight, for me, was enough "worse" (more repetitive, more "grind") that I only played it for a couple of hours... came back a month later and gave it another couple of hours. Co-op may have made it more interesting but it just seemed click grind to me.

I bought Walking Dead for a fiver. It does seem good, although the story seems better than the gameplay. (The QTEs are a little annoying.)

Oh, and if you don't have Civ V: Civ V!

We've only just started playing Far Cry 3, but so far it's excellent open-world shooty fun. Not sure how much longevity it has.

If you enjoy city builder games, then Tropico 4+Modern Times dlc is a great purchase. On the surface it seems like it might be a light hearted city builder with a great theme (you're the dictator, benevolent or otherwise, of a Caribbean island during the Cold War) but there's a fair amount of depth to the politics and economy as you can choose to be more democratic or communist, militaristic or peaceful and aim at tourism and industrialisation, or just have fun in the sun with a small rural community.

Also, anyone who likes sneaking games and doesn't have a] Mark of the Ninja b] Dishonored or c] Deus Ex: Human Revolution+Missing Link DLC is missing out.

All three are really good. The latter two are quite similar in a lot of ways. I have spent a lot of hours in these games, staring at plant pots/chair backs/corners while waiting for guards to go past.

I agree with you on Human Revolution. Am definitely tempted by Dishonored.

Dishonored is great - some very similar gameplay, awesome voice acting (Roger Sterling from Mad Men gives you missions), and great art style. It doesn't work if you try to run & gun, but for sneaking and teleporting and for sneaking around a party carrying a body trying not to get spotted like Adam West's Batman with a bomb, it's ace. I'm sure it'll be a daily deal.

Update: Walking Dead is very good. I also succumbed to the temptation of Kerbal Space Programme for a tenner.

I know a few Kerbal Space Programme addicts.

And I'm glad Walking Dead gets good as it goes along. I heard a lot of praise for it when it first came out.
