Recruitment advert for the Territorial Army:

So the way to "get the message out" is with a billboard. On top of a mountain. In the middle of nowhere.

In thick fog.

(Of course, by reproducing this advert, I am helping to "get the message out", but only after adding sarky comments. I can't imagine that's what they wanted.)

On a billboard on a mountain in the middle of no-where that can be seen from anywhere with a TV or internet connection because they've filmed it, made an advert of it, and put it on Youtube.

It doesn't matter where it is, it matters how many eyeballs it gets in front of.

I agree with Pellinor that the billboard isn't the advert; but I agree with Philmo that the message the advert sends out is "Join the TA and you could be doing completely pointless things showing a complete lack of understanding."

The message to me is "Join the TA and you could do exciting and challenging stuff that no normal person would think of doing".

Can we add the phrase "...in their right mind"?

Mind you, I fail to see how carrying heavy objects up mountains where you can't even see the view is in any way "exciting".

But then I'm clearly not the target audience. I have a deep resistance to, as kargicq puts it, "doing pointless things showing a complete lack of understanding".

The problem with this is that there is a Cadbury's Wispa advert around at the moment along very similar lines - 3 friends just decide to take a giant inflatable to the top a mountain, explicitly described as a crazy pointless thing to do, but just you know, for fun. Which undercuts the TA advert (and I'm pretty sure it's not deliberate referencing at all, just a very similar idea at the same time but with totally different goals) by (a) emphasising the daft, pointless, lulz aspect of the venture, and (b) okay it's an inflatable not a billboard, but still the civilians just do it as the three of them, in ordinary gear, without needing the briefing/backing/equipment of an entire army troop :-p

Compare and contrast

Okay, I misremembered, it was 5 friends :-) Still, a much better advert than the TA one, and sends a clear message that you don't have to join the TA if you want to misspend your time doing pointless/exciting/abnormal things :-)
