I'm pretty sure the answer to 17 is that Mick Fleetwood was fucking Clapton's girlfriend/wife.

Sort of like how "she might need a lot of loving but she don't need you" was tom petty bitching about Clapton fucking his wife.

Not quite, but you're thinking broadly along the right lines.

Oh, so then Clapton was fucking her while she was married to Mick Fleetwood.

Both Clapton and Fleetwood are so notorious for fucking other people's wives it gets confusing. (Remember when Mick Fleetwood was fucking Stevie Nicks even though she was married to Buckingham - even though both Nicks and Buckingham were in Mick's band at the time?)

Well quite, although he's not the guilty party here.

Layla was written by Eric Clapton about George Harrison's wife Patti Boyd (with whom Eric was having an affair). Patti's little sister Jenny was married to Mick Fleetwood.

So the correct answer is 'brother-in-law'.

Jenny herself had an affair with Fleetwood Mac's lead guitarist Bob Weston which resulted in Fleetwood sacking him from the band and in turn to Lindsey Buckingham replacing him. Buckingham insisted on bringing Stevie Nicks with him leading eventually to the situation you describe.

Ah! Thanks! I knew Layla was about Clapton fucking/wanting to fuck someone's wife, I just got lost in the extremely complexity of the sexual relations of the members of Cream and Fleetwood Mac.

Wasn't Buckingham doing Christine McVie at one point as well?

Not that I'm explicitly aware of, although it's certainly possible. I've seen an interview with Mick Fleetwood in which he says something like him and John McVie were the only members of the band not to!

While married to John McVie, Christine had an affair with the band's lighting director (who is the subject of the song 'You Make Loving Fun', which by a strange coincidence my iPod, set to random shuffle, decided to play on my way to work this morning). She then had a fling with Beach Boy Dennis Wilson (the subject of the song 'Hold Me'). She was then married to keyboard player / songwriter Eddy Quintela for something like 20 years, although they have since divorced.

Damn! Ok try Bulwark then as anything else will mean searching the RN website or googling. It certainly won't be any of the sludgemarines.

HMS Bulwark is the correct answer!

(Based at HMS Drake, just around the corner from the two bridges in the userpic.)

18. Aspens sucker and make themselves into small woods don't they? (Like that sodding plum tree at the top of the garden, which is now at least a coppice) So I spose technically 'one aspen' could cover a lot of ground.

35. England??? Frankly the origin of the grandfather of Ryan Giggs is not a clue. It's an obfustication.

40. for some reason I thought someone had got this one. Andre Norton.

From: [identity profile] philmophlegm.livejournal.com
18. Correct. Aspen trees are apparently genetically identical stems forming from a common root mat, which makes an aspen grove (or 'clonal colony') a single organism. The Pando aspen grove in Utah is estimated to be 80,000 years old, is 106 acres in size and masses about 6,600 tons, making it the world's heaviest known organism.

35. No. Here's another clue. Giggs is a UNICEF Ambassador and has visited this country in that role.

40. Correct. I can understand why female SF authors adopt male pseudonyms, especially when writing YA fiction, but not when their real name is Andre...

Her real name isn't Andre, that's another pseudonym I think. I think her real name is actually Alice.

Ah I see. Alice Mary Norton apparently.
