Today is apparently 'International Women's Day'. It seems somewhat unfair that half the world's population only get one day a year. Presumably men are entitled to the remaining 364 days.
Anyway, what prompted this post was the thought that none of the socialists, communists and feminists behind this "occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women" probably intended that this should be an excuse for the broadcasters of the England / West Indies test match to bring us shots of all the scantily-clad women in the crowd.
"Gratuitous", as lanciatore would say.

The Witcher
Mar. 8th, 2009 06:52 pmAnd while I'm recommending games for the PC, how about 'The Witcher: Enhanced Edition'?
Based on the fantasy stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski; uses the same Aurora engine as Neverwinter Nights 2 (but rather more prettily); interesting plot; satisfying combat; atmospheric setting; moody hero; adult themes (well okay, sex). Good stuff. I finished it last night. Of the games I had for Christmas, it's The Witcher that has been taking up all of my spare gaming time - not Fallout 3, not Far Cry 2 and not Call of Duty 4.
If you do go and get it on my recommendation, make sure you get the enhanced edition, or at least patch the original version to the enhanced version. If you buy the enhanced edition, you also get a few goodies like a 'making of' DVD, a CD of the original orchestral soundtrack (Radio Rivendell's 2007 'Best Fantasy Game Soundtrack' winner) and a CD of music of various styles inspired by Sapkowski's stories.
Honestly, I've really enjoyed this game - it might even make my top 10 all time. Certainly top 20.

One to watch
Mar. 8th, 2009 11:28 pmAnyone else see any of the South Africa / Australia test match?
Phil Hughes. 20 years old. Second test. 115 first innings. 136 not out second innings. Youngest player ever to score two centuries in the same test. And you should have seen some of the shots he was playing.
England need to start working out how to get him out in time for the Ashes.
