When we lived in Cheshire, we were only about three miles from Chester Zoo. We joined the North of England Zoological Society, which gave us free admission all year. By the time we moved to Cornwall, we knew the elephants well enough to tell them apart and recognise character traits. Sheba was the oldest elephant then, back in 2000 but was the one who always looked after the youngsters.
