Anyone played Mass Effect? What did you think?

I'm thinking of playing it now that I've finished Dragon Age. Mass Effect 2 is supposed to be better, but I'd rather start at the beginning.

I would start at the beginning with the story, because the Mass Effect games are all about the story.

I enjoyed it a lot. Its quite simple and linear without much fluff and side quests - but thats no bad thing in a game thats supposed to be strongly plot driven. It looks pretty - and the combat system is straightforward and was easy to play for someone who doesn't usually play FPS. The setting is fun, if you like that sort of space opera thing. Really, I see no reason to spoil ME1 by starting in the middle of the series.

OK - that's sold me.

I'd steered clear of it because of the DRM (for once in my life I actually boycotted something), but now it's on Steam, and I don't have a problem with Steam's blend of DRM.
