Philmophlegm is annoyed today.

Philmophlegm would like to watch the Amstel Gold Race this afternoon. (That's cycling again). The Amstel Gold is one of the spring classics and forms part of the ProTour. It is Holland's most important race. And it isn't on Eurosport!

Eurosport UK has two channels. One is showing motorcycling. Fair enough - that's a popular sport in this country, and a sport that isn't covered well by other channels. The other is showing the Snooker World Championship followed by handball. The snooker is also on BBC1. So I wonder how anyone watching the British version of Eurosport would not be able to watch BBC1. And handball? That's not a sport, it's a bloody foul! How many people in this country are into handball? I'll accept that Germans like it, but this is Eurosport UK for christ's sake!

I'm having to make do with streaming video from www.cycling.tv. I've never used this before. Fingers crossed that it works ok.

Philmophlegm is also annoyed about the lack of coverage of the NFL draft next weekend on British TV. You may remember my earlier post on why the Draft is such a wonderful sporting event: http://philmophlegm.livejournal.com/5629.html. In it I mentioned that the Draft gets live television coverage in this country from NASN.

But not this year! Sky bought the rights to all NFL programming in the UK, including the Draft. Only they aren't actually going to show the Draft. Aarrgh! If I'm being honest, I subscribe to NASN pretty much for the draft (and certainly not for all the ice hockey they currently fill their schedules with).

So I'm going to have to get my draft fill via internet radio. I spent several hours last night trying out various "watch TV free on your PC" solutions (you know the sort of thing - gets advertised on eBay a lot). Unfortunately, despite several of them advertising ESPN (which broadcasts the Draft in the US) as one of the channels that is available, I couldn't get enough bandwidth on any of them. And I suspect that the ESPN they advertise is actually the Chinese ESPN, which is all about Premiership football and would probably not have the Draft.

Arguably you don't really miss much by listening to rather than watching the draft. You miss clips of the players drafted, but I'm hoping ESPN's own website will be able to provide these on demand during the draft, at least for the major players. You do miss Mel Kiper Jr's hairstyle (one of the engineering marvels of the modern age). ESPN has its own streaming internet video service - ESPN 360 - but it's only available in certain parts of the US (frustratingly).

cycling.tv is working well. And it's an exciting race too. 20km to go!

If you're interested, Gerolsteiner's Stefan Schumacher won. Brilliant tactics by the Gerolsteiner team.
