An AKICOLJ question about dark lords

One of the cliches of epic fantasy is the 'dark lord'. My question is this:

Did Tolkien invent this concept? Is there an earlier 'dark lord' in fantasy or myth? There are certainly bad gods in some myths, but I can't think of any that are proper dark lords in the way that Sauron or Morgoth are.
