From sally_maria, via the_marquis:

In sally_maria's words: "What I'd like people to do is to post pictures - no more than one or two - of interesting places, landmarks or buildings in their town. Either the town where you live, or where you grew up - somewhere that you maybe still associate with the idea of home.

Tell us a bit about the picture and why it's interesting. We all get to the see the tourist pictures of the world, but not so much about the smaller special places that mean something to us."

This is Wrexham Swimming Baths, with its distinctive hyperbolic paraboloid roof. Apparently the council had the choice (within the constraints of the budget) of having a pool the right size for competition, or one with an odd shaped roof. They went for the odd shaped roof, which is a bit mad. But I quite like the pointlessness of it - it's a silly shape for no other reason than to be a silly shape.

And this is Acton Park Junior School in Wrexham, my old school. The main hall on the left is the oldest part of the school and was a diamond polishing factory before it became a school in 1923. (And obviously, when we were first told this, we went straight out at break time and searched the grounds for diamonds...) The rest of the building on the right was actually three long corridors with classrooms arranged around a central quadrangle with a sundial in the middle. These bits were actually made out of wattle and daub.
