Most bizarre aspect of the opening ceremony: The National Health Service. I must admit, I don't quite get why we're supposed to be proud of this, and it must have been truly bizarre for people from all those other countries who have healthcare systems better than we do. Taxpayer-subsidised healthcare isn't especially unusual in the world. The only thing odd about the British system is that it is run by a massive and centralised state bureaucracy - and that's the bit that people complain about the most.
Worst example of 1980s-style tokenism: Having ten or so clones of Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the opening ceremony and then thinking "Oh no, we can't possibly have all of them be white!". I note that this tokenism wasn't extended to the actors playing people arriving on the Empire Windrush...
